Career & Education

 

Cal-SAFE
Monday - Friday, 8:30am – 1:00pm
The California School Age Families Education Program is a comprehensive, integrated, community-linked program that serves expectant and parenting students and their children.  You can participate if:
You are expecting a baby
You are a teen parent (male or female)
You are 18 or younger
You have not graduated from high school
*daycare is provided while you attend class!

Youth Grants For Youth Action
Wednesday, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
This group is for youth who want to take a powerful leadership role at YU and make a difference in the community.  Team members will manage a youth grant making program at YU and have the power to give away thousands of dollars for youth projects that benefit youth and the community.  Team members can receive community service credit, build leadership skills and make change in Oakland.  Step up and be leaders now.

Mayor Summer Job Program (MSJP)
The Oakland’s Mayor Summer Job Program provides real job opportunities to young people for a chance to work and learn at local companies, organizations and government agencies.  Participants receive work experience as well as ongoing trainings to allow them to cultivate their skills and be successful in the job market.

 

Employment Recruitment Sessions
Keep your eyes open for the next recruitment session where individual companies come to give information about their open positions and application process. It’s a great way to learn more about current job openings as well as make contacts with company reps. Past recruitment sessions have been held by UPS, Red Bull, the City of Oakland and more so stay tuned!

Media Arts

 

Music Production 101
Tuesday and Thursday, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
This is a must for anybody who is interested in taking their music to the next level. Music Production 101 teaches beginners the basics of beat making, engineering (recording music & vocals), and artist development.

Music Production 201
Monday and Wednesday, 1:00pm – 3:00pm
Class begins June 25, 2007
For those that are ready for the intermediate level, Music Production 201 offers deeper instruction into each of the MI 101 activities. Those that are enrolled will be chosen based on their skill level and/or their participation in the beginning level course.

Intro to Film & Television
Tuesday and Thursday, 3:30pm - 6:00pm
Its time to bring your stories to life! You could be the next big time Hollywood director! This course will focus on learning the basics of film & television, including camera work, lighting, sound, & editing. A DVD will be put together showcasing the skills of the class.  Eligible students may receive both High School and College credit!

Wheels of Steel
Monday and Wednesday, 3:00pm - 5:00pm
Tuesday and Thursday, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Class begins June 25, 2007
DJ Twelves & DJ Kleptic will teach you everything you need to know about the 1’s & 2’s and how to use them with precision. From basic scratching to blending, you will discover the techniques needed in order to rock parties and concerts! Are you ready to master the wheels of steel?

Artist Development
Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00am - 1:00pm
This course will focus on providing support in developing recording & performing skills while teaching people about the business of music. Learn what a mechanical licensing agreement is. Find out how to set up your publishing company and how to properly file for copyrights. Discover what it takes to trademark a name, logo, or design.

Graphic Design
Monday and Wednesday, 1:00pm - 3:00pm
Class begins June 25, 2007
Money is the name of the game when it comes to designing graphics.  Every rapper, singer, and band needs an album cover designed and you could be the one to do it!!!  This course will show you how to turn your art skills into cash and have your Myspace page looking hella tight.  Learn how to design posters, flyers, and cover art while having fun!  Have an opportunity to work with Too $hort & Thizz Entertainment.

House Band /Jam Sessions
Thursdays, 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Calling all you drum hitting, piano playing, guitar stroking, sax & trumpet blowing musicians to the stage!!! This course is actually a big jam session which will practice and play together twice a week. Have an opportunity to play live at shows sponsored by popular Bay Artists as well as in house concerts.

PHYSICAL & PERFORMING ARTS

 

Turf Dancin’
Monday and Wednesday, 5:30pm – 7:00pm
This Hip Hop Dance And Fitness program will challenge you to learn a variety of Hip-Hop styles.  Beginning with choreography, students will learn counts and rhythm that will enhance their own style and prepare them to compete in one on one and group battles.

Reggae Dancehall
Tuesday and Thursday, 4:00pm – 5:30pm
Reggae Dancehall focuses on two areas:  basic Caribbean dance technique and choreography.  Technique includes winds/bumps, body rolls, footwork and isolation.  Choreography segments blend freestyle with the hottest Reggae Dancehall moves.  Class also includes a body conditioning segment focusing on toning the abdominal muscles, legs and arms.  Reggae Dancehall is a great way to exercise, have fun and learn some hot dance moves.

Theatrical Modeling
Monday, Wednesday and Friday,
4:00pm – 7:00pm
Students will learn basic modeling techniques and runway choreography, perform standard backstage clothing management and perform in a fashion show.  Students will also learn about small business entrepreneurship through engagement with at least three clothing designers.

OM: Meditation and Yoga Group
Monday—Thursday, 9:00am - 10:00am
June 18—July 12(no group July 9th and 10th)
Get in touch with your self and your inner guidance by practicing simple meditation and yoga techniques.  Through meditation and yoga practice you may find yourself more centered and energized throughout the day.

Theatre/Movement/Dance!
Tuesday—Friday, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
June 19—June 29 and July 10—July 20
Group members will build self awareness and experience positive self expression through expressive arts including movement, dance and theatre.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

 

Upaya Center For Wellbeing
Tuesday, 3:00pm – 6:00pm
Holistic healthcare services including massage therapy, acupuncture, acupressure, chiropractic care, and advice about nutrition and healthy eating habits.

YU Health Clinic
Youth Uprising is committed to the physical and emotional health and wellbeing of all of our participants and members and offer a number of services for members to take advantage of our youth participants and members and offer a number of services for members to take advantage of.

Medical Services
Monday and Wednesday, 9:00am – 12:00pm and 1:30pm – 4:30pm
Friday, 9:00am - 12:00pm
Doctors can provide complete physicals, sports physicals, immunizations, lab testing, prescriptions and advice on any health problems.  They can also see youth for confidential reproductive health matters.  A nurse is available everyday.

Mental Health Services
Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm
Mental Health staff are here everyday and can talk to youth ages 12-21.  We offer individual, family and group therapy.  We also provide psychiatric testing and medication evaluation and management.

YU BASKETBALL
The Youth UpRising Basketball team is committed to physical health, leadership skills, and teamwork.  As part of the YU Stars Basketball Team you will compete in year-round tournament and games.  Practices are mandatory!  Contact Jason Williams, Case Manager at (510) 777-9909 ext. 182.

 

YU CASE MANAGEMENT
Youth UpRising Case Managers provide you a safe place where you will be treated with respect. Case Managers upholds confidentially, and serve as your support system.  Case managers will “hook you up” with housing, employment, health, and educational services.  Contact (510) 777-9909 and ask for a Case Manager.

Youth Members gather for food and discussion on current events. Every 4th Thursday of the month, 4 - 5:30pm

Conscious Film Series. Every 2nd Friday of the month 4-6pm

 

Man Up
For the Young Men growing up in Oakland: a weekly forum on the many issues of becoming a man in our community. Wednesdays 5:30-7:00pm

 

Bosses’ Circle
